Parsec was discussed at the IGDA NY Virtual Worlds discussion on 4/23/08. Unfortunately the video presentation of it didnt work. But the speaker gave an interesting presentation about the potential of virtual worlds for game type applications. He also discusses his colourful orientation experience at the start of this video ! :

SLoodle group visit PARSEC

Thanks so much to Gianina Rossini for filming this great footage at PARSEC with her educational group from SLoodle. Sloodle is an Open Source project which aims to develop and share useful, usable, desireable tools for supporting education in virtual worlds, making teaching easier. Through engagement with an active community of developers and users, the Sloodle project hopes to develop sound pedagogies for teaching across web-based and 3D virtual learning environments. Sloodle integrates the Second Life multi-user virtual environment and the Moodle learning-management system.

Had great fun today with the SL CACS. They had an interesting time trying to figure out the solution, trying many different ways of singing with the Parsec instrument.

Parsec Muxtape

I’ve been developing alot of concepts and initial ideas for the PARSEC Ensemble lately. I thought I would share some of the music as a muxtape which has and continues to inspire me.

I hope to form the PARSEC Ensemble, a performance group of 7 vocalists within the next month. The ensemble will then rehearse for a while, and then stage a series of concerts inside PARSEC, singing and playing the instrument with their voices.

If you are a professional level vocalist who has experience or strong interest in contemporary music performance and the metaverse, I’d love to hear from you. It’s kind of necessary to have :

a reasonable amount of time to commit to rehearsals
a good enough mic / headset to perform in SLVoice
a quiet enough environment to perform

Experience in audio engineering would be useful too as we may need to use some DSP on your voice signal path, but this isnt essential.

Hope to hear from you, ideally with mp3 samples of your voice !

University of South California visit PARSEC

Holly Willis Phd, a Research Assistant Professor and the Director of Academic Programs, Institute for Multimedia Literacy at the University of California School of Cinematic Arts brought a group of her students to PARSEC today.

It was great session, lasting about 2 hours. We went through the aims of the project, explained the process of its creation and then spent some time in the chamber. Thanks so much for coming Holly and gang !

The initial response to PARSEC has been quite overwhelming. A number of blogs and media outlets have already interviewed the team, with many more interviews due to happen soon. Here are some of them :
